JOSHUA CALAIS DREAMING

Kent based songwriter, musician and producer Joshua injects soulful vocals and moreish pop melodies into his sophisticated, personal take on electronic pop. Think the grooviness of Homeshake, paired with the laid-back, R&B sensibility of Silk Rhodes. Joshua's new single 'Calais Dreaming' has just dropped along with a self-made music video. The video is a lo-fi film of Joshua driving along a baron, motorway landscape, with footage of him singing to his new baby layered delicately on top. The synth parts in this song are awe-inspiring - consisting of both the catchy lead lines and rhythmic steps that tread in synchronicity with the tight and coherent rhythm section. Josh's voice is classic and timeless; he uses full, uninhibited expression when he sings, which seeps soulfulness and shines through this song like holy crepuscular rays. In Josh's own words, he says: "This song almost wrote itself as I pondered the death of a very close friend and the arrival of a new baby a few months later. Their lives seemed to intertwine and whilst driving to Calais for work I recorded on my phone a stream of sung consciousness that almost word for word became this piece of music." The lyrical content is bitter-sweet, as Josh tells us about the loss of a friend and the arrival of his baby - making the tone of the song so very pure and organic, reminding us of the cycle of life and death, and all the incredible moments we are lucky enough to share in between. -Ellie Rose Davies
